GEAR TUTORIAL: SURVEY TEMPLATES
Some divers prefer to survey using wetnotes, some prefer to use a slate, others use the mNemo device, and some prefer to print custom survey sheets.
Fabio Rueda, a cave cartographer based out of Spain, has contributed templates of his personal survey sheets as a resource for other divers. The template is well organized and features everything required for cartography-grade survey, including LRUD measurements.
If you have a laser printer, check out our reviews on waterproof papers for printing options.

- Record the LRUD measurements in the column directly below the Station Name and Depth boxes.
- Measure and record the distance to the next station.
- Measure and record the compass bearing of the line from the first station to the next station.
- Draw an arrow to indicate the direction in which the survey was taken.
- Record any notes about the cave or cave line such as cave features, floor composition, restrictions, leads, flow, ceiling height, percolation, intersecting passages, line conditions, and permanent markers.
- Repeat as needed.
- Number the survey pages in the bottom right corner.
